Transaction ITEM field - Can I customize the width?

So I see that the ITEM Column field in a sales order and estimate is a bit short, wrapping the item code.....

How can I lengthen the width on that? Would suitescript allow me to manipulate it with a INNER HTML replacement or is there a better way? I need something like this...
