Purpose of Password field-type?

Thru a series of exchanges with Support, it seems there is no use for the Password field-type. It cannot be manipulated with scripts, so I don't know a use case. Anyone else?

My hope was to utilize it somehow to bandage the wound Product has applied to ODBC-only users, wherein they are now required to reset their password every 90 days (or whatever your company's password policy is). I thought to run a script every ~85 days to reapply the same password, thereby resetting the password-reset flag and allowing our integration tool to continue without requiring a reset of the password in it.
