Customer Status - Inline Edit

We have some scripting controlling the 'Status' field through selection of checkboxes - As such, the 'Inline Edit' functionality allows users to (accidentally) modify the Status field when in a list view rendering it out of synch with the checkboxes.

Is there a way to prevent inline editing on the Status field only while still allowing it on all other fields?
