custom field editing disabled in saved search

I created a saved search that includes custom fields in the results.  When editing is enabled for the search, the pencil displays above the custom columns but the fields are 'disabled' for any role other than administrator?  What am I missing?  I've created many other saved searches with custom fields that don't have this issue.
