Saved Search - getting child items of parent items not display; criteria is "yes"

I'm running a saved search that has 2 criteria -

Online = Yes;
Inactive = No

Results = Online (yes or no)
Name
Description

I'm getting some matrix child items in the results even though the parent is not displayed on the web site. The result for "online" = "yes" for these child items - but is correctly "no" for most child items of parent items we've taken off the site.

It makes no sense to me -- how can a child item show as "yes" to online if the parent is "no".

Any ideas?
