How to display 'Time of Day' field as a.... time?

I've created a custom Time Of Day field on the Phone Call record.  When I view the field in the UI from the Phone Call record is shows a formatted time string. (9:30 PM)

When I include the same field in a formula search result ({custrecord_my_date_time_field}) it prints the value as a date (oddly the first of the month...)

So, do I need to do something special to pull the time component out of what appears to be a DateTime field?
