using the TO_NUMBER function in saved search formulas

I have a saved search with a formula(numeric) column and I am getting an Invalid Expression error when I use the TO_NUMBER function.  The TO_NUMBER function is used on a custom free-form text field {custbody7}.  I have this function working fine in other saved searches with the same application.  Any ideas would be appreciated.
