Reason for the following error when grouping on a result

I have a custom record search and am trying to group a result column and getting this error:

The result field Order cannot be grouped.  Please edit the search and omit this field or use a different summary function.



Why can't it be grouped?

I'm also getting an unexpected error when grouping on a text field.  Are there some know limitations with grouping that I should be reading about somewhere?
