SQL Expression TREAT example

Does anyone have an example of using the TREAT sql function?

My use case is as follows:

I have a list that has numbers as the values, however it looks like they are being treated as a record ref because I can't do aggregations on them in search.  I am trying to find a way to case these refs as numerics so that I can use the aggregate functions.

Any thoughts?
