saved search showing customers per month as graph

I'm not sure if this is possible, but I would like to create a search that will show the number of customers created each month (that match certain criteria) in a graph.

I have no idea how to control the way graphs are created from a saved search, I think I'm missing some initial, high level concept...

Anyone have an example of a graph search?
