Custom field with display set to inline doesn't show up

I created a custom free-form text field and set it's display type to inline text.

I then was trying to create a saved search using this field in a formula and kept getting the "ERROR: Invalid Expression" error.

Finally I narrowed it down to the fact that fields with display type "inline text" aren't displayed in search results.
