Group Functions

I can't seem to get any group function in the formula field to work and I was wondering if it is due to syntax error or Netsuite capability. When customizing saved search, does Netsuite support group function in the formula field or do you have to select them from summary type? If yes, does it support the median function?

ex.

formula field = avg({numeric_field})

vs

Summary Type>Average, formula field = {numeric_field}

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
