limit on global search results?

When I submit a customer search with criteria "Name/ID has keyword Smith" it returns 1522 records.

When I submit a global search for "cus:Smith" it returns 262 records.

I have failed to locate any documentation or discussion that would explain why the global search does not return as many records as the customer search. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
