Why would this throw an error?

( nvl({quantityonhand},'0') + nvl({quantityonorder},'0') - nvl({quantitybackordered},'0') ) /  ( {preferredstocklevel} )

it seems to be the divide function because when I change the divide to multiply it works like a charm!

( nvl({quantityonhand},'0') + nvl({quantityonorder},'0') - nvl({quantitybackordered},'0') ) *  ( {preferredstocklevel} )
