Department Number 'Invalid Field' ?

I created a custom 'other field' on the department record with an ID of 'custrecord_deptnumber' (free form text). It is 'show in list' and does show the on default department list.

However, in an employee search I used formula-text {department.custrecord_deptnumber} and it is returning 'invalid field'. Any idea what the issue could be?
