Search with KEEP() function

Can we use distinct in a case function?
I need to sum the value from a field with out duplicates.
I tried CASE function, but it didn't work.

CASE WHEN (distinct ({custentity_cusrec})) THEN SUM({custentity_cusrec.custrecord_count}) END
custentity_cusrec is a reference to a custom record
custrecord_count is an integer field in the custom record.

Is it possible to achieve this using RANK, DENSE_RANK, or KEEP?
Can we use any of these functions in the criteria?
