Formula Numeric - CASE WHEN Blank Date Field

I've been trying to CASE WHEN on an empty Date field but it doesn't seem to work.

Formula Numeric
(case when {custbody_date}='' then 0 else 1 end)
This is returning 1 for all the cases

I want to get the sum of the item quantities if the date field is empty.
SUM(case when {custbody_date}='' then {quantity} else 0 end)

What am I doing wrong here?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
