Drill down does not work on group by formula

I have a summary report that uses the following formula for the group by function:
[INDENT]case {custrecord_field} when 'T' then 'Yes' else 'No' end[/INDENT]

I don't see a drill down link on that column as I would expect. If I add a standard field like created date with a group by funcation, that column get a link but of course not the formula column. Can someone explain why the formula doesn't work and if there is a work around?
