Class Filter on Customer Records?

I'm confused.  When creating a Customer saved search, I am able to select Class as one of the filters.  Available to me are all the various classes in our system. I can select multiple values and what I select seems to impact the results.

But what is this doing?  I do not see a Class field on the Customer record and I can not turn on a Class column in the search results.  As far as I can tell from reading the documentation, Customer records do not get a class.  What does this filter do?
