DLE field of type list works sometimes and sometimes not

I have a transaction search that includes a custom field of type list.

In my sandbox DLE works perfectly, and I can set the custom field via the search.  I just set up the apparently identical search in my production instance, and that field is not direct-list-editable.  DLE works on other fields (text, boolean) in the search, but not that one.

What could be causing this inconsistency?
