Changing abbreviation on Lists

Hi,

I have a couple of lists and i've noticed quite a few have duplicate abbreviations. The list includes colors, sizes etc. IF I was to change the abbreviations, will it have any impact on products which are using the different lists?

I don't want to go changing abbreviations and then people struggle to order a size or a colour because the abbreviation has changed.. if that makes sense?

Please can someone kindly advice.
