Error: Invalid Expression when trying to calculate time between two dates

I have tried everything to get multiple formulas to work and they keep throwing the same error.. Error: Invalid Expression. I have even tried the example provided in the support center:

= {trandate}-{createdfrom.trandate}

Nothing is working can someone please tell me if the latest release has impacted formulas in searches at all?
