What does "Any" do in the search description filter options?

Whenver I'm adding criteria to a saved search on some fields you get several different search criteria options (Any, is, is empty, starts with, contains). What does "Any" do or how do you use it? Any time I select Any and then enter informaton in and click save it won't add it to the criteria.
