Projects: Remaining Work (backlog) To Be Used as KPI

I am trying to calculate the total Remaining Work for all projects, by Month. This would be used as a KPI to look at the trend of total Remaining Project Hours (or backlog of hours) by month. I can easily gather the current backlog or Remaining Hours but I need to see the EOM open or Estimated Hours - Actual Hours over time. Any suggestion on the search type (Project, Project Task, Time Entry) and how to measure these results? I've tried several search types, fields and SQL statements to no avail.  Thanks in advance.
