Problem with events linking to customers

NS 2008.2 is not filling in events fields correctly (specifically the company and contact) when making an event.

Go to a contact and create an event via the events subtab (contact > general > events),  Note this does not apply if creating event through the activities subtab (contact > general > activities) 

Now check the related info tab - then company field will be in the format "company name : contact name"  and contact field will be blank.

Why does this matter?
1 - When reporting on sales activity, the reports do not pick up activities which use this "shorthand" method of connecting the records.
