Campaigns

I have tried putting together a winter campaign last year and could not get it to execute.  Now my boss wants another campaign run.  I have read all information about campaigns but am still confused where and how to proceed.  Has anyone had a campaign that ran smoothly and could you please help me with what proceedure you used.
