Accessing Child Record data in Customer Email Merge

I have created a customer group which I'd like to send a bulk email to.  However, some of the data I want is from a custom record which is a child of customer.

Is there anyway to reference the data from the child records in a customer record email merge?

I know if I do the custom record search, I can reference the customer record, but then I can't create a group from the custom search records.  So this seems like a Catch 22.

Any one have any ideas?
