Campaign Response Search

I'd like to know the open rate of my bulk-merge emails to customers.  In the HELP guide it give instructions for Creating a Campaign Response Search, which would seem to be what I need, but I don't get it.  What am I searching?  Does NetSuite have the responses to my prior email campaigns and I'm searching?  Or is this something that somehow gets tagged to an outgoing email campaign and then somehow results can be obtained later after the emailing?  help?
