setting opportunity.tranID

I am trying to use web service to add an opportunity, but have been unable to set tranID. The doc states "Sets a unique ID number for the transaction. If a value is not provided, the system assigns a number. If the value is not unique an error is thrown. "
However, whatever value I put in here, does not appear in NetCRM - it always seems to generate its own value. Can tranID be set?
