Searching while editing records in Portal

Hi all,
I'm having issues which i think may be related to concurrent usage of the portal and web services.

While executing a search that returns all of our customers, the search stops  when other users are merging and updating customers through the portal.

The API will simply stop returning results, and not throw an error.

Has anyone else come across this problem?
