How do I get a list of all customers?

I can successfully get a customer directly by using the internalId and I can also find it by searching on the internalId.  However, I don't see how to get a complete list of all of the customers.  It doesn't look like there's a specific API for this.  Is the standard procedure to just do a search on a certain field?  Like the "Status" or "Inactive" field?
