Custom Field - fieldType

The documentation + web UI has confused me a bit as to whether or not a value will be delivered through this field to web service consumers.  We have written code that assumes customField.getFieldType() will never return null; however, it appears this is invalid.  It does return null if dealing with inline HTML (tested against both a Custom Record Custom field and an Entity Custom Field).

Is null a valid return value for customField.getFieldType()?
