Send email attachment via suitescript (a merged attachment)

Is there a way to send a merged PDF template as an attachment in suitescript. There doesn't seem to be a way to do this.

I can however create a pdf template with the form fields, a group, and send it out through the merge mail function. This is a manual process to invoke the merge mail and I'd rather do it through a script.

Is there a way to have a script call a merge mail application? This would be an alternative to sending a merged PDF through a scheduled suitescript. Either way works for me.
