Unclear about ListOrRecord

The type of a custom field can be set to ListOrRecord. When I retrieve that kind of field definition via getCustomization() call, I get a custom field definition which contains a ListOrRecordRef. This ListOrRecordRef has a internal id set and a value specified for "name". How do I know whether this internal id belongs to

1) A custom list
2) A custom record
3) A record defined in the WSDL.

Should I search all the custom list definitions and custom record definitions for a match on the internal id and if that fails assume that this is a typeId for a record defined in the WSDL? Is the internal id unique across these 3 groups?
