Fake/virtual contact for an individual customer

When we add a Customer who is an individual, we see a corresponding Contact.  In the UI, the Contact is titled "Contact: Individual Relationship".  It seems like this Contact is created automatically.  Is this a real Contact record or a fake/virtual one created in the UI?  In the UI, there seems to be an ID associated with these Contacts, but I don't see a way in SuiteFlex to get the Contact for an individual Customer.

I'm very confused.
