Custom Inventory Number Field Import

Is there a way to bring Custom Inventory Number Fields in during initial Inventory Adjustment transactions for a new company?  In my testing I have been able to include Inventory Adjustment custom fields in web service add operations, but I don't see an obvious way to value those Inventory Number Fields for the serialized inventory I need to import.  Is there some kind of multi-step workaround?
