Balance on an account

I am trying to get the balance on an account via the API. I have managed to query account information and retrieve the description etc. However I cannot see how one would retrieve the current balance on an account or the balance as at a particular date or end of a period.

Does anyone have an example, or could you perhaps just point me at the correct list object or search procedure that should be used in order to get the account balance?
