search for payments against an invoice

Hi hope this isn't  a newbie question but can someone help me with how to search for customer payments for a given invoice?  I can get an invoice ok with an externalid but I dont know how to go from there to get the associated payments.

More generally, are there example programs available to show how to do this kind of thing?
