Item Group Search

I am trying to do an Item Search using the search value type _itemGroup in ItemSearchBasic.  The call executes successfully, but no results are returned.  I have one item group defined and can search in the UI without any problem.  I am able to search by other item types/subtypes.

Is there anything else besides the type search value that I need to specify to return item groups?

I am using the 2009.2 version of the API.
