Creating information items

I'm new to NetSuite and having trouble finding an entry point in the documentation.  Could someone direct me to any resources that might help me to build an application that creates information items out of an external data source?  My two interests are:

- API calls for creating and searching for info items
- Any scheduling hooks that might exist
