SuiteScript - Call to External Web Service?

Can SuiteScript make a call to an external web service?

For example, I want to update the status in an external system when the Sales Order is fulfilled.  Is there a way I can do this in SuiteScript, or do I need to use SuiteTalk?  (I'd rather have it occur in real time, versus scheduled....)
