SuiteTalk and smbxml

Hope all is going well? As a newbie, I have some questions, I am just finding my way around the forum, so this may be a repeated question.
Is there a document that details an smbXml to suiteTalk migration?
I have been asked to preform this task and I have a few issues, mainly in the mapping of id's.
One of the biggest ones is with custom fields.
for example we have a number of custom fields that where defined while using the smbXml interface and these have a string name to identify them, a name I believe.
