Getting a Project Resource List

I am creating a custom record which I want to create a lookup list based on the Project resources.  The project resource list appears to be a union of Vendors and Employees who are marked as "Project Resources".  It does not appear that this structure is exposed.  Any thought on what to do?  Ideally, I will not need to create two list fields on my custom record to reference either Vendors and Employees.
