{nlsessionid} usage

Has anyone had any success using the {nlsessionid} to pass a sessionid on a Web Link?

The SuiteBuilder documentation states : '{nlsessionid}: the browser's session ID; useful for passing a session to a web service in a WebLink' but does not provide any details of what can be done with the sessionid.

I have setup a weblink and can pick up the sessionid guid in my called URL but would then like to be able to use this instead of having to login. Is this possible? If so is there any documentation providing details?
