How to set up a Summary Search Field with value based on 2 filter fields?

I'm looking to do something seemingly simple.

I have a custom record which is designed to capture sales by rep AND by period. I have a saved transactions search which I can use to populate the 'Sales to Date Period' on my custom record , but as far as I can see it will give me EITHER sales for all reps for the period OR Sales for all periods for the rep.
