SQL Essentials: MOD vs. REMAINDER
Both the MOD and REMAINDER functions used performing mathematical operations, but they serve slightly different purposes and can yield varying results in certain scenarios. Let's clarify the distinction between these two functions:
MOD Function:
- Definition: The MOD function calculates the remainder of the division of one number by another, focusing on the positive remainder.
- Syntax: MOD(dividend, divisor)
- Result: It returns the remainder of the division, ensuring that the remainder is always non-negative. If the remainder is negative, it will add the divisor to it to make it positive.
- Use Case: MOD is useful when you want to determine the remainder in a context where negative remainders are not meaningful or require a consistent positive result.
