how does incoming email work?

Hi NS users,

We currently use netsuite outlook integration to attach messages to netsuite records and found it to be insufficient.  if we are going to use netsuite web interface to send/receive all emails, how does the incoming email get to netsuite?  they are currently going to our own exchange mail server.  Can someone having past experiences point me some documents or white papers?  thanks!
