smbXML: heirarchical customers

Hi, trying to import a case in smbXML using the caseEntityRefElement.  XML excerpt:

<caseEntityRef>  <parentName>307</parentName>  <parentName>307:2</parentName>  <name type="customer">307:12</name>  </caseEntityRef>


and getting this error back:
"There are one or more records with the name [307:12] in this account. The type of record must be specified in the name reference. See the Developer's Guide for more information."

I thought I was doing that with the type="customer" attribute???????
