Making the top menu different from the left menu

When creating a tab, there should be the option to display in top menu and/or display in the left menu. (An example would be 2 checkboxes, 1 for Display in Top Menu and 1 for Display in Left Menu.) Some of the tabs that I have created I would only like to show them in the top menu but not the left menu and vice versa. Is there something Im missing or is this just an option that we don't have?
