Different Theme on homepage

We are looking to create website and we would like the homepage to have a different theme from the rest of the site. Basically so the rest of the site could follow the standard header, footer, navigation list, and content pane but the homepage wouldn't need  most of that just  a header and content pane. Is there a simple way of doing this or would we have to host the homepage separate from the rest of the site? Thank You.
